Day 83 Chaumont
We are not strolling at the moment. In order to have a good stroll we need to be in possession of four good legs. Until we move up from three good legs back to four we will lie about and do nothing.
We intended to have a detour to Chaumont as part of the day off module as there is a massive viaduct over a wide river valley which we wanted to have a look at. So being reduced in the leg department is more of an inconvenience to Janet than a disaster. We have learned as well that Chaumont was given a great honour by the Pope, the Chaumont Grand Pardon. If the 24th June is a Sunday and all the people go and have a good old pray in the basilica on that day then all of their sins are forgiven. We arrived a day late unfortunately.
We didn’t eat the spectacles, just a ham sandwich!
I spotted this job which someone might fancy.
Chaumont is full of interesting buildings which we are intending to explore tomorrow.
Before settling down with a beer and a piece of local cheese I went out just for a stroll around Chaumont tonight. Most of the towns we have visited further north show the signs of past conflicts. Some of the towns being completely flattened and then rebuilt in the late forties and fifties. Chaumont feels as though most of the centre of the town is as it was hundreds of years ago and is a joy just to stroll through. On my evening stroll tonight I noticed a music shop with a closing down sale. In the window is an ancient 3 row melodeon. I might pop down there tomorrow, just for a look!!
The air tonight is filled with swallow/swift/house martin type birds tucking in to a banquet of insects and zooming about putting on a fabulous display.
I am attempting to combine all the daily stroll tracks into one. The trial thing is one of the links on the right hand side of the page. I have got to June so far as I am too mean to buy a proper GIS programme and am using home made stuff. Fingers crossed, I might get the thing to do all sorts of things.
Mike, go for the melodeon! Hope you both enjoy the rest.
It is an odd thing but this whole thing is such good fun that we don’t really need a rest.
Ah yes, but think about it this way; you’ve been doing this now for nearly three months . . . . . You both need a holiday – enjoy a few days off!
Hope the leg’s better soon Janet,
Anthony
Thank you, Anthony. It is beginning to feel better.
Enjoying your literary output Mike; sorry to hear of the lack of legs, perhaps a day off will fix things! (bet you get that melodeon) xx
Hope legs rapidly increase back to 4. You could always stay put for a wk, buy said melodeon and play non-stop for a wk and then post to Lee to take to Italy (along with the maps!) I’m sure it won’t cost a lot more than the maps – or sell it on ebay!
We saw swallows in the church porch at mid summer, darting in and out of their nests (and possibly looking slightly anxious at all the unexpected extra noise / people / morris dancers queuing to get into the church. (We commented on this – perhaps not in the most sotto voice – and were chastened by Jells)
Hi – sorry to hear there are delays in the leg department, just needs a bit of servicing I guess and will be good as new again soon! Like the stroll map snake 🙂 by the way.
My wife and daughters have been strolling tonight – it was the Race For Life at the West Mid Show Ground – there was a team of 30 or so supporting her. They all enjoyed it and hoping to raise £1000 between them for Cancer Research…. can be seen here…

That plumb brandy sounds nice too – I had Damson Cider at the Salopian this week – yummy and 11% 😉
keep on strollin’ (when the leg is recovered)
Hi Chris, your wife’s efforts put ours into perspective, do pass on our congratulations.
The leg repair department is hard is hard at work and we will trial the results tomorrow.
Sorry to hear that the Leg is so troublous. I hope the working leg count will soon increase to four!
Now thanks to Becky i know what the sudden burst of chatter in the church porch was about – very good accoustics in that there porch with sound channelled into church, causing a few turned heads in the back pews. Well that’s y excuse for my remarked upon burst of bossiness. 😉
My money’s on that melodeon suddenly finding itself receiving more tlc that it is currently accumstomed to. I hope it has the stamina!
Enjoy…
4 legs good, 3 legs bad?
take it easy and keep on with the ice…..
The ice makes a tremendous difference.
But have you found any gin yet to get the full potential out of the ice? Hope you feel back to full strength soon. (Although avoid taking the tour that is advertised!)
A stiff gin would prepare one for the tour I should have thought!
The Tour d’Arse photograph for Private Eye? I’m sure Ian H. would be suitably amused.
I didn’t fancy that tour. I don’t know why.
